Ukraine, Romania sign agreement to connect gas transportation systems

Operators of the gas transportation systems (GTSs) of Ukraine and Romania have signed an agreement to connect their GTSs at the Isakcha point located on the Ukrainian-Romanian border, near Orlivka (Ukraine) and Isaccea (Romania), which will enable the transit of gas to Bulgaria and Greece, according to the press service of Ukrtransgaz, operator of the Ukrainian GTS.
The GTS operator companies plan to establish permanent and uninterrupted gas supplies from Ukraine to Bulgaria through the Romanian territory, and receive reverse deliveries, according to the press service.
Along with the Greece-Bulgaria and Bulgaria-Romania agreements signed to ensure connections with the international gas pipeline, this agreement will ensure, in the future, a two-way gas transit from Ukraine to Greece (currently only via a virtual northern route).
According to the report, the route was earlier used by Russia`s energy giant Gazprom for the transit of gas to Bulgaria, but following the expiry of the relevant contract, Ukraine and Romania agreed to apply the European Union (EU) legislation that governs the issue.
As UNIAN reported earlier, the transit of Russian gas to EU countries through the territory of Ukraine in 2014 decreased by 29.1% compared with 2013 to 59.4 billion cubic meters (bcm). The transit of natural gas in 2015 increased by 8% compared with 2014 to 67.1 bcm.
Ukrtransgaz also stated that the transit of natural gas through the Ukrainian GTS in the first half of 2016 increased by 31% year-on-year to 38 bcm.
On April 21, 2016, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Romainian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos agreed to facilitate the import of natural gas from Romania to Ukraine.
On June 30, the press service of the Ukrainian president said Ukraine and Bulgaria had expressed their solidarity with regard to the energy independence of the Eastern European region and criticized the construction of the second branch of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
