Ukraine reduces gas consumption by 11% since year`s start

Ukraine in January-September 2016 reduced consumption of natural gas by 11% year-over-year, to 19.1 billion cubic meters (bcm), according to Ukrtransgaz, the operator of the country`s gas transportation system.

Gas consumed by the country in the reporting period included gas of own extraction, as well as gas imported from the European Union and that pumped out of Ukraine`s underground storage facilities, the company reported.

”According to the latest information of Ukrtransgaz`s central dispatch department, Ukraine extracted 15.1 bcm of gas in the nine months of 2016, while imports amounted to 6.3 bcm, and 5.6 bcm was taken from the gas storage facilities,” the company`s press service said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine in 2015 reduced the consumption of natural gas by 20.6% as compared to 2014, to 33.7 bcm. In January-August 2016, it reduced gas consumption by 17.6%, to 18 bcm.

On September 2, 2016, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman said that within three to four years Ukraine could achieve a sufficient level of energy independence and efficient consumption of resources.

Groysman earlier said that the Ukrainian government was looking to boost own gas production to meet the needs of Ukrainian households, and possibly export gas while generating foreign exchange earnings.

As of October 3, Ukraine had not imported gas from Russia for 311 days, Ukrtransgaz said.
