Ukraine loses 1.2 million tonnes of coal due to events in Donbas

Ukraine remained without 1.2 million tonnes of coal due to the events in Ukraine’s east.
Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan told at an extended meeting of the government on Tuesday, a Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Due to the conduct of combat battles in Ukraine’s east, we today lost about 1.2 million tonnes of coal, which we received from those enterprises, which are on an uncontrolled territory,” Prodan noted.
According to him, the government took necessary measures to compensate for the coal deficit. In particular, Ukraine signed an agreement with the South African Republic on the purchase of 1 million tonnes of coal, which should be supplied until the end of the current year.
In addition, private enterprises, which are working on the electric energy market, in particular, DTEK, Donbasenergo, concluded agreements on supply of coal of scarce brand from Russia, which is only in the Russian Federation, the Minister noted.
“Total volume of coal supply on those agreements until the end of the year is 5.6 million tonnes. This volume of coal will be enough in order that as of January 1, 2015, we had more than 3.5 million tonnes of coal at thermal electric stations,” the Minister noted.
He noted that Ukraine today accumulated about 10,000 tonnes of coal.
