Ukraine fines Russian air carriers UAH 721 mln for flights to Crimea

Ukraine has fined Russian airline companies carrying out flights to occupied Crimea UAH 721.236 million, the State Aviation Service of Ukraine told UNIAN.

”After the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, Ukraine has accrued UAH 721.236 million of penalties to Russian airlines that had violated the Ukrainian legislation carrying out flights to the occupied Crimea,” the service said, adding that more than 5,000 decisions were handed down for violation of the no-fly zone in Crimea.

Commenting on the launch of daily flights by Russian Aeroflot airlines on the route Sochi – Simferopol, the representatives of the service said that more than 1,000 lawsuits had been filed against this air carrier to recover fines.

At the same time, the representatives of the State Aviation Service said that these measures still did not contribute to the payment of fines by Russian air carriers.

”So far, they have paid nothing, a penny,” the service said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, after the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation in March 2014, State Aviation Service of Ukraine has decided to ban all flights over the Crimean Peninsula. Later, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has officially confirmed the Ukrainian aviation authorities` jurisdiction and control over the Crimean airspace.

The Ukrainian authorities also ruled to close down Crimea sea ports for international transportation as well as the railway and charter links.
