Ukraine envoy to UN: Kremlin uses same methods in Donbas, Syria

Ukraine`s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Volodymyr Yelchenko condemned the blocking by Russia and China of the resolution on a week-long truce in Aleppo.

The Ukrainian envoy compared the situation in Syria with what has been happening in Donbas.

”The methods used by Russia and the forces under its control in Donbas are exactly the same way they now use in Syria. First they intervene and then they play the role of mediator,” Yelchenko said.

As reported earlier, Russia and China used their right of veto in a Monday vote on a new resolution, which would establish a seven-day truce in Aleppo.

The initiators of the adoption of the document were Egypt, Spain, and New Zealand. The resolution provided for the establishment of a seven-day pause in the fighting in Aleppo to evacuate the sick and wounded civilians from the rebel-controlled part of the city, as well as deliver humanitarian aid to the blocked areas, according to DW.

In addition to Russia and China, Venezuela also voted against the move. Angola abstained. The remaining 11 members of the Security Council supported the resolution.

Earlier Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the adoption of the document will allow the rebels controlling the city to strengthen their positions and complicate liberation of the city.

On Monday it was reported that Syrian government forces captured two more districts of eastern Aleppo, which had been under rebel control. Three weeks ago, Syrian troops backed by Russian warplanes launched a new offensive in the east of the city.
