Ukraine counterintelligence caught Russian spy in Rivne (Photo)

Counterintelligence officers of the SBU Security Service of Ukraine have detained in the Ukrainian city of Rivne an agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces (GRU).

A detainee is a Ukrainian citizen, who resides in Russia, According to the SBU`s press center. The man was reportedly tasked by the Russian intelligence to recruit a senior staff officer of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The spy was overseen by the FSB employee Alexander Ilyukhin, it was reported.

In exchange for the classified documents, including top secret papers, regarding combat training, weapons, mobilization deployment and military cooperation between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and its foreign partners, the GRU agent was to offer Russian citizenship to the Ukrainian officer and his family, as well as financial compensation. The sum would depend on the relevance and importance of military secrets revealed.

Upon receiving a proposal for covert cooperation with the Russian special services, the Ukrainian military serviceman turned to the SBU.

On October 7, the Russian spy came to Ukraine to get classified documents from his contact, who had already been instructed  by the Ukrainian operatives. The next day, the spy was detained red-handed, while receiving a flash drive containing misinformation, which he believed was classified data.
