Steinmeier says separation of conflicting parties in Donbas ‘close enough’

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said that the separation of territories of the conflicting parties in Donbas is a primary task that must be fulfilled within the Minsk agreements.
He said this at a press conference in Moscow on Tuesday after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Ukrinform’s correspondent in Russia reported.
“My colleague Lavrov and I agree that some aspects are now of paramount importance. First, this concerns the separation of the sides. And I can say that we are close enough to resolving this issue, and now we have to see that responsible military now sign this document. Based on this program the withdrawal of heavy weapons from this zone may then begin,” Steinmeier said.
He said that Berlin and Moscow shared the view that the Minsk agreements should remain the basis for efforts to resolve the conflict as soon as possible.
He said that with a superficial look at the overall situation in Donbas “it can be concluded very simply that the Minsk agreements in their main parts have not been met and are not being met.”
