Steinmeier insists on dialogue with Russia

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on continuation of a dialogue, including with Russia, despite aggravation of the situation on the east of Ukraine.
He said at a conference Fourth Berlin Foreign Policy Forum on Tuesday, a special correspondent of Ukrinform in Germany reports.
“We should not refuse from conducting a dialogue in such an aggravated situation,” Steinmeier said.
In his opinion, in this situation it would be unwise “to cut the negotiation channels.” According to the Minister, experience of other conflicts proves that in parallel with making a pressure, finally just the negotiation process promotes de-escalation.
Steinmeier assured that the German government will use “all its possibilities” so that the matter did not come to further aggravation of the situation in Donbas.
“If information of recent two days is true, we will roll back again and the risk of the military confrontation will grow,” he noted.
In his opinion, the EU has no other possibilities still to promote de-escalation of the situation than to introduce sanctions against those responsible for the aggravation of the crisis.
The German diplomat pointed out to the fact that due to the crisis in Ukraine and a new conflict arising from this between the West and the East, the blockade situation has emerged in the UN Security Council. “Until a conflict in Ukraine is settled, it will be hard to reach decisions and resolutions at the UN Security Council, approved by all members, having a right of veto,” Steinmeier noted.
At the same time, the politician called to be “realistic” and do not expect quick results on the way of settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. “I repeatedly said that 14 days are enough for the emergence of a serious conflict, but 14 years are necessary for its settlement,” the German Foreign Minister summed up.
