Russia says no gas price discount from April 1

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak announced that a discount on gas price provided for Ukraine in the framework of the ”winter package” would not be effective from April 1.
”The gas discount for Ukraine, which has been provided by the Russian government for Q1 2016 in the amount of $17.77, will expire on March 31, 2016. The final gas price for Ukraine in Q1 amounted to $212 per 1,000 cubic meters,” Novak said in a statement that UNIAN has at its disposal.
The minister stressed that agreements regarding the gas price discount had been put in place as part of the so-called ”winter package” agreed by Russia, Ukraine and the EU.
According to Novak, starting from April 1 of this year, the gas price for Ukraine will be set in full conformity with the current contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz of Ukraine.
As UaPosition reported earlier, in late November 2015, Ukraine refused from buying Russian gas. According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Russian price was higher than that offered by European partners.
This year, Ukraine plans to purchase, when necessary, the Russian gas at a price lower than $200 per 1,000 cubic meters. The price of gas on the European market is projected at $175-180 per 1,000 cubic meters in 2016.
On March 10, Naftogaz CEO Andriy Kobolev stated that the company does not yet have clear plans regarding the resumption of gas purchases from Russia`s gas monopoly Gazprom.
