Russia partially relaxes food embargo

The Russian government has decided to relax the food embargo introduced against Western countries and allow the import of beef and poultry, fresh and dried vegetables used for baby food production, according to the BBC Russian news service.
”The Russian Ministry of Agriculture should confirm the targeted use of products that are imported, therefore, it must develop a relevant procedure,” the BBC reported, citing a Russian government resolution.
In late May, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered the government to extend the embargo until the end of 2017 with regard to those countries that had imposed sanctions against Russia for its annexation of Crimea and accusations of involvement in the Donbas conflict.
Earlier, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the G7 leaders had agreed to extend anti-Russia sanctions in June. The existing sanctions would remain in place until the Minsk agreement was fully implemented, according to Cameron.
As UNIAN reported earlier, in August 2014 Russia imposed restrictions on food imports from the United States, the European Union, Canada, Australia, and Norway. Later, Russia extended its food embargo until August 2016 inclusively. The list of countries was also extended to incorporate Albania, Montenegro, and Ukraine.
