Russia says fresh water deficit in Crimea may be reduced by 2019

Russia has declared that a stable system to ensure water supply to occupied Crimea will be arranged by 2019, said Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia Sergey Donskoy, according to Russian news agency TASS.

”The whole infrastructure will be prepared, water pipes will be laid, and we will have a more stable supply of water to all regions of Crimea in 2017-2019,” Donskoy said.

According to him, it is primarily an issue in the eastern regions of the peninsula.

”Plans for the laying of pipelines must be met so that we can flexibly allocate water resources to secure eastern Crimea at first, where the situation is critical. Efforts are required to a greater extent there,” he stressed.

The minister also said that he intended to initiate inspections of the Crimea water consumers, who take water from main pipelines illegally, in a situation when the peninsula is experiencing acute water shortage.

Consumers must understand that ”water is at a premium in Crimea now and it should be treated accordingly,” he said.
