Rasmussen promises stronger sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Thursday at a press conference in Kyiv that the new sanctions against Russia are possible with further deterioration of the situation in the east of Ukraine.
He noted that if “peacekeepers” are introduced in Ukraine, Russia would find itself in international isolation. “At this stage, it is a hypothetical question,” Rasmussen said.
“We are very concerned that Russia continues to hold this option in reserve. If it continues its intervention, there would be new, more severe sanctions,” the NATO chief promised.
