Radiation near Chornobyl nuclear power plant decreased in two times after new arch was built

The press service of the State Specialized Enterprise “Chernobyl NPP” reported on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, that radiation near Reactor №4 of Chornobyl NPP (nuclear power plant) decreased in a half after covering it with a new safety shield.

The structure, which is estimated at EUR 1.5 billion, weighs 36,000 tonnes, it`s the largest of this kind in the world.

The arch is designed to create a leak-tight barrier to contain radioactive substances for at least the next 100 years.

The technical Director of the Shelter facility Serhiy Kondratenko commented:

“One year is left until the completion of construction of the Shelter facility, covering with the safety shield has influenced the current situation with safety of the Shelter facility,” states the report.
