Putin allows foreigners to serve in Russian army

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree amending the order of service in the Russian army.
According to the decree, foreigners are allowed to serve in the Russian army on contracts, the gazeta.ru online news site reported.
“Servicemen who are foreign nationals are involved in the fulfillment of tasks amid martial law and amid armed conflicts, in accordance with universally recognized principles and norms of international law, international treaties and laws of Russia,” reads the statement.
It notes that foreign nationals must speak Russian. The contract may not be signed with a foreigner who is under investigation or on trial, has an outstanding conviction or serves a sentence in the form of imprisonment.
