President urges G7 to prolong sanctions against Russia

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday, May 16, met with G7 Ambassadors accredited in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to extend the sanctions against Russia for the non-fulfillment of the Minsk agreements, according to the president`s press service.
According to the president, pro-Russian militants have tended to escalate the situation in Donbas in recent days and Russia is fully responsible for that. The G7 Ambassadors have been provided with comprehensive facts of Russia`s violations, presence of Russian troops in the occupied Donbas and ongoing deployment of Russian troops and weapons to the occupied territories.
The Head of State noted that sanctions were an ”efficient instrument” and ”motivating factor” that would encourage Russia to fulfill the Minsk agreements, according to the report.
The President has particularly highlighted the importance of deploying the OSCE armed police mission in Donbas, which is vital for the political settlement of the situation. He urged the G7 countries to endorse this initiative.
”We can speak of political mechanisms only when we have security preconditions, progress in the deployment of the OSCE armed police mission, sustainable ceasefire, withdrawal of artillery and heavy weaponry, withdrawal of Russian occupation troops and release of all hostages,” the Head of State noted commenting on prospects of peaceful resolution in the east of Ukraine.
Petro Poroshenko addressed the G7 Ambassadors with a request to increase pressure on Russia regarding the immediate liberation of Nadia Savchenko and other prisoners illegally held in custody in this country, as well as the imposition of personal sanctions against everyone involved in trumping up cases against Ukrainians illegally imprisoned in Russia.
