Poroshenko tells Merkel how Ukraine passes “tragic test”

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is on a working visit to Kyiv.

“The President at the meeting called symbolic the fact that a visit of the Federal Chancellor is on the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine and on the eve of the Independence Day. Poroshenko said that now Ukraine as ever passes “a very tragic test “in its history,” a statement reads.
He stressed that, according to recent data, the level of public support for independence is even higher than in 1991, when the country gained it.
Poroshenko called Merkel “a good friend and a strong advocate of Ukraine” and noted that over the last two months they communicated more than 20 times and it really helped Ukraine protect its interests.
Ukrainian President thanked the people of Germany for supporting Ukrainians in their quest for peace and democracy.
In turn, Merkel said that she intends to discuss in Kyiv the issue of German support to Ukraine in difficult times and “the road to peace, we have to go.” The Chancellor thanked the President for the friendly welcome.
