Poroshenko calls on Trudeau to synchronously ratify FTA deal

President Petro Poroshenko had a phone conversation with Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau on Tuesday, October 11, having discussed a series of issues of bilateral agenda, the president`s press service reported.

”The President offered to synchronously ratify the FTA agreement signed during the visit of Prime Minister Trudeau to Ukraine on July 11-12,” the report says.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the government of Canada September 19 submitted an agreement on a free trade area with Ukraine signed July 11 to Canada`s parliament for ratification.

In the framework of the FTA, Canada is set to provide technical assistance to Ukraine for the modernization of the country`s industry. The agreement provides for asymmetric liberalization of markets for goods to protect domestic producers in sensitive areas. After the entry into force of the agreement, the Canadian side will open up to 98% of its market, while Ukraine will eliminate tariffs for almost 80% of Canadian exports of goods, followed by the cancellation of other tariffs in stages, within the next three, five and seven years. Also, quotas were established for certain Canadian products, while some products were excluded from the agreement.
