Pentagon sees Russia as major threat to national security

The United States sees regional and sometimes global claims by Russia and China as the biggest challenge in the context of global security.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert Work said this in an interview with U.S. specialized edition Defense News, Ukrinform’s correspondent reported.
When asked about the biggest threats and trends for which the Pentagon should be ready, Work said: “The first, of course, are state powers, like China and Russia, both of them on the UN Security Council, both with nuclear weapons, both with regional aspirations and some global aspirations.”
He noted that this question was going to increasingly take a lot of attention of the United States.
In second place among the greatest challenges for the U.S. Work defined “nuclear powers or regional powers that want to become nuclear powers.” In this regard, he mentioned North Korea and Iran.
Moreover, he said, Washington will pay much attention to the fight against international terrorism and transnational criminal networks.
