Parliament has votes for cancellation of Ukraine’s non-aligned status – speaker

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Oleksandr Turchynov has called for the abolition of Ukraine’s non-aligned status and said that there are enough votes in parliament in favor of this decision, the parliament’s press service has reported.
“I think that one of the decisions that should be made by parliament in the next few days is the cancellation of the legislative provision on Ukraine’s non-aligned status, which was pushed through by [former President Viktor] Yanukovych with a gross violation of the rules of procedure. This was done under Moscow’s dictation. Ukraine should pave the way for entry into NATO. Only the Euro-Atlantic collective security system can stop such an aggressor as Russia,” he said.
Turchynov also said that there were enough votes in the Verkhovna Rada for the cancellation of Ukraine’s non-aligned status.
He also said that the position on Euro-Atlantic integration was now supported by most Ukrainians.
