Only one in four trusts Ukrainian media – sociologist

The trust of Ukrainian citizens in the media has declined dramatically amid information warfare that has become more active since the end of last year.
Head of the Department of Sociology, Culture and Mass Communication of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Natalia Kostenko said this at a roundtable meeting on Thursday.
“The level of distrust in the media in Ukraine exceeds the level of trust. Today the media is trusted by only 25%, and 45% of adults do not trust the media. A year ago, the figures were 37% and 29% respectively,” she said.
Kostenko said that compared with the attitude of Ukrainian citizens to the media in 2013, when the level of distrust was similar in all regions of Ukraine, according to the data in 2014, a significant regional difference was recorded. Thus, 24% of respondents do not trust the media in the western regions, 39% in the center, 50% in the south, 57% in the eastern regions, and 68% in Donbas.
