Obama ‘skeptical’ about ceasefire in Donbas

The United States and the European Union are finalizing measures to deepen their sanctions against the Russian economy.
U.S. President Barack Obama said this in his speech in Newport on Friday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.
“Today, the United States and Europe are finalizing measures to deepen and broaden our sanctions across Russia’s financial, energy and defense sectors,” he said, adding that the alliance is fully united “in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and its right to defend itself.”
Obama also said that all NATO allies would provide security assistance to Ukraine, as well as assistance to help modernize the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Commenting on the agreement regarding a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine, he expressed hope that it would be implemented, but said he was “skeptical.” In this regard, he said that pro-Russian separatists must comply with their obligations, even amid the readiness of European leaders to step up sanctions against Russia and its economy.
Obama said that the NATO summit and support for Ukraine from the international community were “a testimony to how seriously people take the basic principle that big countries can just stomp on little countries, or force them to change their policies and give up their sovereignty.”
