Nuclear watchdog extends service life of Zaporizhia`s 2nd reactor until 2026

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine has extended the service life of power unit No. 2 at Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP), which is operated by Energoatom national nuclear energy generating company, until February 19, 2026.

A corresponding decision was taken unanimously by the state nuclear regulator at a recent meeting.

”We`re taking a decision in favor of extending the period of operation of unit No. 2 at Zaporizhia NPP,” Serhiy Bozhko, the head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate, said at the meeting.

As UNIAN reported earlier, state company Energoatom, which operates all functioning nuclear power plants in Ukraine, seeks to ensure that the service life of existing nuclear reactors can be extended, avoiding the construction of new ones. Within the next six years, the company plans to extend the service life of 9 out of 15 units, as their design service life is expiring by 2020.

On July 17, 2015, Zaporizhia NPP sent the state nuclear regulator a comprehensive security analysis of power unit No. 2, seeking to extend its service life. It is noted that the analysis performed certifies that the design of the unit, the technical equipment and administrative measures applied to maintain the protection of structures, systems and components guarantee the secure, reliable and efficient operation of power unit No. 2.

On September 13, 2016, the state nuclear regulator extended the operation of power unit No. 1 at the Zaporizhia NPP until December 23, 2025.

UNIAN memo. Zaporizhia NPP is the largest power generation facility in Ukraine and Europe. Its installed capacity is 6 GW. It operates six reactors whose capacity is 1 GW each. In recent years, the plant accounts for over 50% of electricity output generated by Ukraine`s nuclear power plants. Its share in total electricity generation is over 23%.
