Naftogaz: Households` gas subsidies in past decade total $53.6 bln

Deputy Chairman of the Board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine Serhiy Konovets announces Ukraine paid $53.6 billion in gas subsidies to households from 2005 to 2015.

”The total sum is about $54 billion in the 10 years,” Konovets said at a round table meeting in Kyiv on Monday.

The population paid $10.9 billion for gas in 2005-2015, while the total costs of the consumed gas were $64.5 billion, he said.

Konovets also disclosed that $20.2 billion in cash and $33.4 billion in non-cash forms of subsidies had been allocated over the decade.

The existing system of subsidies has to be changed, because it does not encourage consumers enjoying this advantage to reduce gas consumption, he added.

As UaPosition reported earlier, UAH 2.4 billion in housing and utilities subsidies was allocated for Ukrainian households in 2015, which was UAH 2 billion, or six times up on 2014.

In January-March 2016, housing and utilities subsidies totaled UAH 1.8 billion, which was 14 times up year-over-year.

Ukraine`s Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities Ministry forecasts that UAH 25 billion, or 5.5% of the country`s total budget, will be paid as subsidies to the population in 2016 and UAH 80 billion, or 10% of the national budget will be funneled into this sector in 2017.
