Merkel hopes for progress in preparation for “Normandy Four” meeting

German Chancellor Angela Merkel considers inappropriate to hold a meeting of the “Normandy Four” leaders on Ukraine’s issue in Astana, if this meeting does not bring specific results.
Chancellor has announced this at press conference in Berlin after talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, an Ukrinform correspondent reports from Germany.
“We do not want to have a meeting at the presidential level, which will be completed with no results,” the head of the German government says.
Therefore, she adds, it is “right” that the “Normandy Four” ministers will meet on Wednesday in Berlin. According to her, during this meeting it should be determined whether “the progress for the preparation of a possible summit of the “Four” in Astana has been achieved.”
As noted by the German leader, the situation in the east of Ukraine is currently “very tense” as “the ceasefire has been increasingly violated.” “Now we are moving away from the Minsk agreements rather than approaching its implementation, but those agreements, as before, remain the basis for negotiations,” the Chancellor says.
