Klimkin: Cutting Russia from SWIFT to be followed by its economy collapse

Strengthening of sanctions against Russia will be discussed at the extraordinary meeting of the EU foreign ministers on January 29, foreign minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin has announced, TSN reports.

“Mogherini said very clearly yesterday that Russia faced deterioration of relations with the European Union … EU foreign ministers will summon for an extraordinary meeting on Thursday. I have talked to almost all of them yesterday and today, they are very determined on a point. No one talks about lifting the sanctions,” Klimkin said.

According to the minister, the EU discusses the possibility of introducing sanctions against Russian assets, expanding the list of Russians who will be denied entry into the EU, as well as expansion of the list of Russian companies subject to sanctions.

“If Russia is cut off from SWIFT, the Russian economy will simply collapse,” Klimkin said.

As reported, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini convenes an emergency meeting of the Council of EU foreign ministers on situation in Ukraine on Thursday, January 29.
