Hontareva expects stabilization on currency market

Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Valeriya Hontareva has said he expects the situation on the currency market to stabilize in the near future, according to the official website of the central bank.
According to the report, a meeting was held in the NBU building on December 15 with the leaders of the largest banks in Ukraine. The meeting participants discussed the development of the banking sector and the situation on Ukraine’s interbank currency market.
When discussing the situation on the foreign exchange market, bankers noted that last week the hryvnia exchange rate on the interbank market was at a level that satisfied importers and exporters, whereas fluctuations in the cash segment of the foreign exchange market were mainly triggered by panic. Bankers again supported the continuation of the practice of holding currency auctions in order to form an indicative rate.
“Valeriya Hontareva recalled that transactions with Naftogaz of Ukraine now in no way influence the exchange rate, therefore the National Bank expects the stabilization of the situation on the interbank foreign exchange market,” reads the statement.
