Feygin: Chances for release of political prisoners from Russia poor

Prospects for the release of Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia are deemed bad, Russian lawyer Mark Feygin told 112 Ukraine TV channel, speaking about the chances for the liberation of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, who had been detained by Russian security services on espionage charges.

According to Feygin, the exchange process has worked only once, in the case of Nadia Savchenko.

”None of the detained political prisoners are being exchanged or released now. Prospects for their release are bad. It has worked once with Savchenko, when the names of Yerofeyev and Alexandrov appeared in the media and were discussed to such an extent that it became too awkward for the Kremlin to abandon the exchange. Perhaps, it will happen in this case,” he said.

Feygin also noted that his client Roman Sushchenko was in good health and spirits.

”His health is fine. It does not cause any trouble. He`s in good spirits, too. He is ready to be patient and wait, he has no problem with that,” he said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on September 30 the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation detained in Moscow an Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko, labeling him a Ukrainian intelligence officer who allegedly ”deliberately collected classified information on the activities of the armed forces and the national guard of the Russian Federation”.

Roman Sushchennko has been officially charged with espionage.

Lefortovo court in Moscow ruled to arrest the journalist until November 30.

All court hearings in Sushchenko case are held behind closed doors.

On October 27, Moscow City Court upheld the initial ruling on Sushchenko arrest.

On October 9, counterintelligence officers of the SBU Security Service of Ukraine detained in the Ukrainian city of Rivne an agent of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces (GRU).

A detainee is a Ukrainian citizen, who resides in Russia, according to the SBU`s press center. The man was reportedly tasked by the Russian intelligence to recruit a senior staff officer of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The spy was overseen by the FSB employee Alexander Ilyukhin, it was reported.
