European Union ready to allocate USD billion Kyiv

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Thursday to the EU leaders that the EC may soon provide a maximum of USD 1 billion to help Kyiv finance the purchase of Russian gas.
Interfax reports with reference to The Wall Street Journal.
These funds may be provided in the short term, the negotiators told the newspaper, but this amount is not sufficient to cover the current budget needs of Ukraine.
To remind, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on the EU to provide additional funds to Ukraine to pay for gas supplies.
Ukraine asks the EU to allocate additional EUR 2 billion.
