Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that European leaders, whom he met in Paris, supported Ukraine’s idea of launching a pan-European Russian-language television channel to counter Russia’s propaganda.
The president said during a meeting with the Ukrainian community in Paris that the channel could be launched in May 2015.
“I talked to most European leaders about the joint launch of a pan-European Russian-language TV channel in order to counter Russia’s propaganda,” he said.
According to him, the new channel will be able to fight Russian propaganda in the whole of Europe.
“There are a lot of Russian-speaking citizens here, these are millions of voters who get information from sources that are untrue, are a blatant lie, and the Internet is not enough [to fight propaganda],” he said.
Poroshenko noted that he was impressed by the level of support among the European leaders of the idea of a TV channel launch.
“I hope that we will be able to do so, to make it work during the Eastern Partnership Summit in May this year,” he added.
As reported, earlier Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during a meeting with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said that the launch of a pan-European channel could be a practical result of the Riga Summit. In his opinion, it is important to implement the initiative of a number of the EU countries and Ukraine on the introduction of the pan-European Russian-language channel as a source of objective information.
