The European Parliament is seeking to complete consideration of a visa-free travel for Ukrainians as soon as possible, however the question has hung up in the EU Council, and no one in Brussels takes to predict when the process will be over, Deutsche Welle reports.
Once a legislative act on the abolition of visas for Ukrainians late September has been approved by the European Parliament`s profile committee, the document should be put to a vote in the plenary session, DW reports.
However, first, the European Commission and the European Parliament must agree in a tripartite dialogue on the final text of the bill with the EU Council.
According to DW, this process has not yet begun. Maria Gabriel, the rapporteur on the issue in the EP, told DW she was ready to start negotiations as soon as possible. According to her, the issue of lifting the visas for Ukraine was still beyond the agenda of the EU Council.
Gabriel has said that the vote in a plenary session usually takes place when the European Parliament and the Council have agreed on the text of the document. Time framework for further action in the matter depends on tripartite talks, she said, declining to predict when to expect the lifting of visas for Ukrainians.
Earlier, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, said that the EU would cancel visas for Ukrainian citizens as early as October 2016.
