EU to expand sanctions against Russia in mid-February – EU diplomatic source

The new package of further expanded European sanctions against Russia is likely to be adopted in mid-February.
A senior European diplomat expressed his personal opinion to the Ukrinform own correspondent in Brussels.
“The recent published statement made by heads of state and government of the European Union, in which leaders tasked the Council of the EU for Foreign Affairs to come up with proposals as to further enhanced package of restrictive measures against Russia, confirms a high probability that these sanctions will be approved at the informal European Council Summit on February 12,” the official said.
He noted that European diplomacy is coordinating its position regarding these expanded sanctions with the US government.
As previously reported by Ukrinform, because of the escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine, artillery attacks carried out by terrorists and Russian military in Mariupol, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini will convene an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers on Thursday, January 29.
Several governments of the Member States and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament have officially supported the need to expand sanctions against Russia even this week.
More radical calls are also heard in the EU legislature that is to move from the policy of sanctions to full boycott of the Russian Federation.
