EU may leave sanctions against Russia unchanged – source

The EU is considering two options for further sanctions against Russia. The level of restrictive measures already introduced will most likely remain unchanged at this stage.
A senior European diplomat told this to Ukrinform’s correspondent in Brussels.
“Two options are being considered: to somewhat mitigate the regime of sanctions and leave restrictive measures unchanged. Discussions show that many member states support the continued monitoring of the situation in eastern Ukraine while promoting political dialogue with Russia. I think that today the EU has no consensus on changing the existing restrictive measures,” he said.
As reported, the European Commission and the European External Action Service are completing the preparation of proposals on the further regime of sanctions against Russia, which depends on the implementation of a peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the observance of a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.
It is expected that on September 30, the issue of further sanctions against Russia will be discussed by the EU Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER). The possibility of changing these restrictive measures (weakening, suspension, partial or complete cancellation) is envisaged in the European Council decision of September 12 on their introduction.
