EP proposed abolishing visas for Ukrainians at once as whole

The draft report of the European Parliament on granting a visa-free regime for Ukraine called for the immediate approval of the whole proposal of the European Commission.

The relevant proposal in the draft document was prepared by the rapporteur Maria Gabriel (Bulgaria, European populists), and it will first be considered at a meeting of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on September 5.

The draft report has the stated goal of ”accepting this proposal in the first reading.”

Gabriel said Ukraine had ”achieved the necessary progress and fulfilled all the necessary criteria for making such a decision.”

The speaker noted that the lifting of the visa obligation for citizens of Ukraine who have biometric passports would be a ”concrete achievement.” Visa liberalization will also continue to deepen contacts between people.

In addition, Gabriel took into account migration risks, noting that as of today, the European Union`s refusal to grant visas to Ukrainian citizens was 2%.

”The speaker believes that by voting for the proposal of the Commission, the European Parliament will confirm the principle that each country that fulfills all the necessary criteria may receive liberalization from the visa regime,” the draft report read.
