Energoatom management discusses company`s development with U.S. energy experts

Representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy and the management of the national nuclear energy generating company Energoatom have discussed issues related to the company`s development, its financial position, and the streamlining of operations of Ukraine`s nuclear power plants (NPPs) prior to the start of the winter season, Energoatom`s press service reported.
A meeting held on July 13 was attended by Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Jonathan Elkind, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Clean Coal and Carbon Management David Mohler, Director of the U.S. DOE  Office in Ukraine Andrew Vogt and DOE Program Coordinator at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv Arina Kovalenko.
The report noted that the parties also discussed issues regarding the implementation of investment programs by Energoatom over the next two to five years, including the diversification of nuclear fuel supplies for Ukrainian nuclear power plants, the construction of a centralized spent fuel storage facility using the technology of American company Holtec International and the construction of new nuclear power units.
”With regard to the share of nuclear energy in Ukraine`s energy market over the last three years, it accounts for more than half. And taking into account not only a short-term, but also a long-term outlook, the strategic documents concerning the development of the electric power industry in Ukraine provide for this share being maintained,” the press service quoted Energoatom President Yuriy Nedashkovsky as saying.
He also noted that following the election of its new government, Ukraine has revised its energy strategy. However, Energoatom and the Ukrainian Energy Ministry called for the maintenance of the existing balance in generating power.
