‘Elections’ in Donbas worsen attitude to Russia – Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that “elections” held in Donbas on November 2 are illegitimate and does not even consider the possibility of lifting sanctions against Russia, the Ekho Moskvy radio station has reported.
Merkel called illegal the so-called “elections” held in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics and added that Moscow should more actively influence separatists to prevent the escalation of the conflict.
“Russia isn’t yet contributing in the way we would like, particularly regarding Luhansk and Donetsk,” the German chancellor said.
As reported, Washington also expressed concern about the intention of the Russian leadership to recognize as legitimate the vote organized by separatists in eastern Ukraine and threatened to raise the costs to Moscow for “destabilizing and dangerous actions.”
