Creating a demilitarized zone in the Mariupol sector does not imply the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Mariupol – ATO spokesperson

Kyiv, July 28, 2015. ATO Staff reports that the creation of a demilitarized zone in the Mariupol sector does not imply the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Mariupol.

“Heavy artillery is being withdrawn to the agreed distance. Should the enemy attack, we can promptly return it to the front line,” said ATO Staff spokesperson Lt. Col. Dmytro Hutsulyak.

The situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions became more complicated over the period from July 24-28. Russia-backed militants fired on Ukrainian positions about 350 times over the past four days.

“The enemy utilized 152mm and 122mm artillery thirty-four times, 120mm mine throwers ninety times, Grad multiple rocket launcher systems three times and tanks twenty one times,” said Lt. Col. Hutsulyak.

Pro-Russian militant groups attacked Ukrainian forces eighty-two times and residential towns five times over the past twenty-four hours.

“The enemy deployed 152mm and 122mm artillery twelve times, mine throwers twenty-six times, БМ-21 Grad multi rocket launcher systems three times and tanks six times. Svitlodarsk was fired upon by 152mm artillery, Shchastya sustained shelling by a tank and Opytne received fire from 120mm mine throwers and tanks,” said the Lieutenant Colonel.

As of today, July 28, Militant groups continue delivering fire in the Donetsk sector.

“Pro-Russian gangs have used artillery and mine throwers on ATO troops’ positions near Avdiyivka, Opytne, Maryinka, Kurdyumivka and Travneve,” said Hutsulyak.
