Concessions to Moscow, including the roll-back of anti-Russian sanctions, would increase the threat to Europe`s security, said President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite commenting on the European Union`s decision to prolong for another six months the economic sanctions against Russia, according to Ukraine Today.
”The EU position is firm and consistent – sanctions against Russia continue because Minsk agreements are not fully implemented,” Lithuanian president said, according to Delfi news outlet, Ukraine Today reports.
”Any indulgence will only encourage Russia`s aggressive policy and increase the threat to the security of Ukraine and the whole Europe,” Grybauskaite was quoted by her press office as saying.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on July 1, the EU prolonged sanctions against Russia introduced in the wake of the Kremlin`s aggression in Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea. The restrictions targeting specific sectors of the Russian economy will be enforced until January 31, 2017.
Last week, the EU extended sanctions against Russian-occupied Crimea for another year, until June 23.
The western powers have repeatedly said that Moscow`s withdrawal from Crimea is the only way for the sanctions to be lifted.
