CoE secretary general welcomes adoption of reform laws in Ukraine

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland has welcomed the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Tuesday of the laws on prosecutor’s office and the fight against corruption, the press office of the Council of Europe has reported.
“I welcome today’s [Tuesday’s] adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the package of laws related to the reform of prosecution, the fight against corruption and the creation of the anti-corruption bureau. The law on prosecution and the removal of the general supervisory function have been long-standing commitments of Ukraine to the Council of Europe and their adoption today is an important step toward fulfilling these commitments,” Jagland said.
At the same time, the CoE secretary general said he was disappointed that because of the disruptions, the Verkhovna Rada could not continue its session, and therefore important legislation, notably the law on internally displaced people, could not be adopted.
