Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari may leave Russian market

Luxury brands such as Bentley, Lamborghini, Ferrari and others may leave the Russian market due to the fact that the Russian government has refused to lift a requirement regarding the installation of ERA-GLONASS automated emergency response systems. Besides, the regulations require at least two crash tests, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported.
Vehicle certification is based on the performance of two cars in two crash tests, according to Russia`s technical regulations. It is noted that the cost of these crash tests for luxury car segment is extremely high given the fact that only a few cars are sold annually.
Importers of luxury cars were seeking to be allowed not to conduct such expensive crash tests, but the Russian government is said to have rejected the initiative, a source familiar with the matter told the newspaper.
The Russian government`s move will affect such brands as Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Aston Martin, Bentley and Ferrari. There is also a risk that sports cars, electric cars (including Tesla) and such brands as Lexus and Infinity may leave the Russian market, according to the newspaper.
The source went on to say that the Ministry of Industry and Trade fears that with the cancellation of the requirement to carry out crash tests, the Russian market may see an increasing number of vehicles supplied without emergency systems. According to the ministry, this may lead to more mortality cases in traffic accidents.
Russia`s technical safety regulations require that all car importers and manufacturers equip vehicles with ERA-GLONASS system starting from 2017.
