Accounts of Ukraine`s Energoatom unlocked – Groysman

The court has ordered to unlock the accounts of National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom, blocked due to unlawful attempts of Ukrelektrovat to recover doubtful debt, Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman wrote on Facebook.
Groysman said the unlocking of the company`s accounts would enable it to carry out financial obligations before its EU and U.S. partners, including under loan agreements, as well as to restore confidence in the company of foreign banks.
”We will be able to resume the program on diversification of nuclear fuel supplies for Ukrainian nuclear power plants and continue the work scheduled to get prepared for the autumn-winter period,” Groysman said.
As UNIAN reported earlier, in March of this year, the enforcement service seized Energoatom`s accounts and property for a total amount of UAH 200 billion, thereby blocking the operations of the country`s largest power generating company. In this respect, the company has lost an opportunity to make payments. The situation followed the attempt by JSC Joint Venture Ukrelektrovat to recover UAH 127.3 million of doubtful debt allegedly owed by Energoatom.
In early March, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko vetoed law of Ukraine No. 3097 on amendments to some laws of Ukraine on ensuring settlements in the energy sector with regard to Energoatom. This prompted unscrupulous lenders that gained support of certain law enforcers to seek disruption of the company`s operations.
On May 25, Head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine Serhiy Bozhko described the situation with the blocking of Energoatom`s accounts as the act of sabotage. He stressed that according to the law, Energoatom was tasked with ensuring the maintenance and safety of nuclear power plant operations. Bozhko has said the nuclear energy regulator would shut down power units if the blocking of the company`s accounts affects the performance of its functions.
Earlier, Deputy Head of Atomprofspilka, the union of Ukraine`s nuclear energy and industry workers, Oleksiy Lych, stated that the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry, acting behind the scenes, had developed and submitted for approval a draft of the government resolution on Energoatom`s corporatization. Lych argues the document does not take into account the specific nature of the nuclear energy industrial complex, and may deprive the state of control over the energy giant.
UNIAN memo. Energoatom is Ukraine`s largest electricity producer, accounting for about 50% of the country`s overall power output. Energoatom is responsible for the safe operation of all nuclear power plants in the country.
