United Nations Security Council condemns Istanbul attacks in Ukraine-initiated statement

The UN Security Council has passed a statement condemning recent terrorists attack on the Turkish city of Istanbul that killed dozens of people and injured many more, according to Ukraine`s Mission to the United Nations.

”Ukraine has initiated a statement by the UN Security Council because of terrorist attacks on Istanbul,” the mission tweeted on Monday.

”The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks in the city of Istanbul, Turkey, on December 10, during which at least 39 people were killed and 155 injured,” the statement reads.

The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice and urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of Turkey and all other relevant authorities in this regard.

According to CNN, a Kurdish militant group has claimed responsibility for twin bombings in Istanbul that killed at least 44 people, according to an updated report. Most of them were police officers. As many as 155 people were reported injured.

Thirteen people have been arrested in connection with the blasts, according to Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu. Of those killed, 30 were police officers, Soylu said at a press conference Sunday.

The explosions, one large blast followed by a smaller one, occurred about 23:00 local time (15:00 ET) after a heavily attended soccer game at Besiktas Vodafone Arena.

A remote control detonated a car bomb for the first explosion, according to Soylu. Shortly afterward, a suicide bomber caused a second explosion at Macka Park. The two locations are less than a mile apart.
