Ukrainian Parliament to address to European Parliament this week on visa-free travel for Ukraine

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy has announced Ukraine`s Verkhovna Rada will address to the European Parliament this week regarding a decision on the introduction of visa-free travel for Ukrainian citizens, according to an UNIAN correspondent.

”I think either on Tuesday or Thursday we can jointly reach a decision and issue an open statement, because Ukraine has really coped with the whole set of tasks that were put in front of us. No country has had so many requirements for the implementation of a visa-free regime than it was in case of Ukraine,” Parubiy said at a meeting of the Conciliation Board of leaders of factions and chairmen of the parliamentary committees.

He noted that a working group had been established in parliament, which will prepare the statement to the European Parliament so that the decision on a visa-free regime could be adopted prior to the Euromaidan anniversary.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the European Commission April 20 proposed the European Parliament and Council of the European Union abolish visas for Ukrainian citizens. This proposal was the result of a positive evaluation by the European Commission announced in December last year, confirming that Ukraine had fulfilled all the criteria within the Visa Liberalization Action Plan.

On September 26, the European Parliament`s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) backed a report on granting Ukraine a visa-free regime and provided a mandate to start negotiations between the EU institutions.

October 23, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the EU would make a decision on the introduction of a visa-free regime with Ukraine ahead of the EU-Ukraine Summit scheduled for November 24.
