And that’s precisely what Poland tried to do Tuesday, carefully doling out two enormous weapons deals that sent an anti-missile air defense system to the US and the purchase of helicopters to a Franco-German consortium.
Paris’s warm glow may be quickly chilled, however, as Poland thumbed its nose at the EU’s defense procurement rules and scrapped an earlier commercial tender for its Wisła missile defense project. Instead, Warsaw will go for direct talks with Washington to buy the €5 billion Patriot system from Raytheon.
