Sandra Kalniete, a Latvian MEP and vice-chairwoman of the centre-right European People’s Party group, says that she was denied entry to Russia yesterday (2 March) to attend the funeral of Boris Nemtsov, the opposition leader who was murdered on Friday.
Kalniete, who was briefly Latvia’s European commissioner in 2004, said on Twitter that she was detained at Moscow airport and had her diplomatic passport confiscated. She says she was told that entering Russia would constitute a criminal act, and was put on a plane back to Brussels. Kalniete says she was not given any reasons for the decision.
