Interviews for top UN job put Europe in spotlight


NEW YORK — Europe may be facing criticism for political dysfunction but politicians from the European Union — and countries aspiring to join it — are front and center in New York this week as the United Nations interviews candidates to manage the 70-year-old institution.
Bulgaria’s Irina Bokova, Portugal’s António Guterres and Montenegro’s Igor Lukšić kicked off the U.N. secretary-general hearings Tuesday, fielding a flurry of questions, from countries weak and powerful, on issues including reforming the U.N. hiring process, gender diversity and peacekeepers in the Congo.
