Gazprom is going down


Once Russia’s chief lever of influence over the EU, Gazprom has been facing headwinds of late. On April 22, the European Commission unveiled a long-awaited list of charges alleging that Russia’s once most profitable company has breached EU anti-trust legislation by abusing its dominant position in Central and Eastern Europe. The Commission’s “statement of objections” condemns destination clauses banning the resale of gas from one member state to the other, unfair pricing and the linking of long-term contracts to consent to build the South Stream pipeline (now defunct).
