The European Union today called on Russia to allow international monitors to be deployed along the length of its border with Ukraine and took a step towards further measures against separatists in eastern Ukraine. They did not, however, indicate any plans to toughen economic sanctions on Russia.
Foreign ministers from the EU’s 28 member states demanded “a halt to the continuous violations of the ceasefire, a withdrawal of all illegal and foreign forces, mercenaries and military equipment”, and called on Russia to observe the terms of a peace process initiated in Minsk in early September, which included a ceasefire.
