EU lifts most sanctions against Belarus


EU countries agreed Monday to lift most of the sanctions the bloc had imposed against Belarus in recognition of steps taken by the former Soviet state over the past two years, but said some human rights concerns remain.
Foreign ministers meeting in Brussels decided not to extend restrictive measures against 170 individuals and three companies in the country. The sanctions — which included asset freezes and travel bans — had been temporarily suspended last October; the new decision removes them permanently.
