The national leaders of the European Union’s member states have condemned Turkey for conducting a seismic survey in an area off Cyprus that has been licensed to foreign companies for the exploration of hydrocarbons.
The Greek Cypriots, who control the internationally recognised government of the divided island, have suspended reunification talks with the Turkish Cypriots in response. The talks resumed in February following the election last year of Nicos Anastasiades, a pro-settlement politician, as president of Cyprus.
They also decided to veto the opening of any new policy chapters in Turkey’s stalled membership talks with the EU.
