Commission denies Oettinger broke ethics rules


European commissioner Günther Oettinger did nothing wrong when he traveled to Budapest at the invitation of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the private plane of a pro-Russia German businessman, the Commission said Thursday.
Zoltán Kovács, spokesperson for the Hungarian government, told POLITICO that the businessman, Klaus Mangold, “is a paid advisor to the Hungarian government,” as justification for the flight.

Kovács said “there was no separate payment for the trip” by the Hungarian government, meaning its costs were covered via payments made by the Hungarian government to Mangold.
